SICILY. Syracuse. Deinomenid Tyranny, 485-466 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24 mm, 17.25 g, 6 h), circa 480-475. Charioteer driving quadriga walking to right, holding goad in his right hand and reins in his left; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses. Rev. ΣYR-ΑΚ-ΟΣ-ΙΟ-Ν Diademed head of Arethusa to right, her hair drawn up at the back and wearing pearl necklace; around, four dolphins swimming right. Boehringer 188 (V84/R128). HGC 2, 1306. Nicely toned and of fine style. Struck from a somewhat worn obverse die and with minor scratches on the reverse, otherwise, very fine.
